The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water on the planet and supports some of the largest fisheries in the world. It is a spectacular space bordered by the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba with an astonishing diversity of species.
There are 29 marine mammal species found in the Gulf of Mexico and millions of migratory birds cross the Gulf each year. It is home to five species of threatened and endangered sea turtles. The area is struggling to balance an ecotourism industry with the protection of species such as whale sharks.
